The Beginings

1948

It is not known who made the decision to start to raise funds for the purchase of the playing fields, but on August 3rd 1948 the village held a Bank Holiday Fete at which £94 15 Shillings and 9 Pence (£94.79 in today's money) was raised and deposited into the Blunham Playing Field Fund. A number of events were held over the years and by December 1950 the balance stood at £257 2 Shillings and 10 Pence. (£257.14) By the following December it had grown to £412 9 Shillings and 11 pence (£412.49) and by December 1954 £638 18 Shillings and 6 1/2 Pence.(£638.93)

1957

The Blunham Playing Field Association (BPFA) was formed in 1957 when just over five acres of land was purchased on behalf of the Parish of Blunham as a recreation ground. At the same time the then trustees registered as a charity and formed the association. The original trustees were:

Herman Christopher Saunders 60 Station Road
Thomas Ewart Protheroe 69 High Street
Sidney Ernest Sawford 40 Station Road
Cyril John Holmes 15 Park Lane

They on behalf of the village purchased the land for £699 with a Grant from the Ministry of Education for £411 from the widow, Agnes Gurney of the late Thomas George Gurney of the Walnuts, 42 Barford Road.

The original conveyance gave a right to eight organisations to nominate representatives to sit on the management committee. These being:

   Organisation  Original Representative
1 Parish Council  Hector M Rawlins
2 Blunham branch of the British Legion Albert L Jeeves
3 The Blunham Cricket Club Frederick G Tester
4 Blunham and District Angling Club Roy B R Rawlins
5 Blunham branch of the Women's Institute Cecilic Protheroe
6 Blunham Voluntary Primary School William Simms
7 Blunham Old Meeting Baptist Chapel Ronald Frederick Buckle
8 Blunham Parochial Church Council  The Reverend Gerald G F Edwards

Most of these organisations no longer exist or choose to not be represented nowdays. However the Parish Council do have two representatives and we continue to work closely with them.
