"WHITTLESFORD, a parish in the hundred of WHITTLESFORD, county of CAMBRIDGE, 6 miles (W. by N.) from Linton, containing 486 inhabitants. The living is a discharged vicarage, in the archdeaconry and diocese of Ely, rated in the king's books at £10, and in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of Jesus' College, Cambridge. The church is dedicated to St. Mary and St. Andrew. A market and a fair were formerly held here, but both have been long disused. William Westley, in 1723, bequeathed lands, now let for £50 a year, for teaching poor children. At Whittlesford bridge are the remains of an ancient hospital, said to have been founded before the time of Edward I., by William Colvill, and dedicated to St. John the Baptist."
