The place:
In the wapentake of Ainsty, a detached part of the parish of St. Mary Bishop-Hill
Junior, York, and a part in the liberty of St. Peter; 4 miles from York, 5½
from Tadcaster. Here is a chapel of ease, dedicated to St. Giles, in the peculiar
jurisdiction of the Dean and Chapter of York. Population 281.
