The place:

A parish town, in the wapentake of Buckrose, Liberty of St. Peter; 6½ miles from Malton, 9 from Pocklington, 13 from York. Population 389. The Church, a peculiar of the Chancellorship of York, is a vicarage, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, in the deanery of Buckrose.
