THE REGISTERS OF BURTON FLEMING.
The Regester booke of all Wedding Christninge & buryalle had in the towne & pishe of Burton fleminge comonlye cald Northe
burton inrowled herein by me Rat Browne vicare theire, trewely gathered out of one old regester theire founde frome Anno 1538
untyll this p'sent yeare of Or said lorde God 1538 etc.
The Quene Majesty did lie at north burton with her army the 5th of March 1642
Collected for the towne of Marlebrough one shilling eleven pence
Dorithie Barughe daughter of James Barughe was baptized the 14th daie of Aprill
Whereas the Inhabitants of North Burton have by their Certificate of the 25th
day of this instant November informed me that they have chosen John Frankish of
the same place to be their Register of Marriages Birthes and Burialls according to
an Act of Parliament of the 4th of August last past and by authority therein given
is allowed and sworne for the execution of the same place by me. In wittnesse
whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Boynton this 23th of November 1653

Wheareas there have beene severall controversies betwixt the Impropriators of the
Tithes and the Vicar of North Burton and the rest of the freeholders theire
and other the Inhabitantes of the same Towne concerning the proportions which the
Impropriators and Vickars should paye to all assessements and charges imposed upon
the Touneship in generall by Act of Parliament and for the Taxes and Rates to be
paied to the Poore Church and Constable for the Endinge of all Contraversie
suites and differences in all times heereafter it is concluded agreed and covenanted
by and betweene the said Impropriators and Vickare theire heires and successors of
the one parte and the rest of the Inhabitantes and Freeholders of the said Toune
of North Barton theire heires and assignes of the other parte In flame and manner
followinge That is to say That the said Impropriators and their heires and Vickar
for the time being shall pay to all monthlie assessments hereafter to be imposed
upon the Toune by Act of Parliament one full sixth parte and to the rates for the
releife of the poore one full ffifthe parte of the whole some that shall be raised
and levied upon the Lordshipe for the said assessments and rates to the poore
aforesaide viz.: The Impropriators of the Tythe of the Bondage feild shall pay
three fifthe partes of the said sixte parte for their tythe come barne and close
thereunto belonging the Impropriator of the Tithe Lambes and Vickar for the time
beinge one fifth parte of the said sixte parte and the Impropriator of the Tithe of
the Demesness and Hall deale one fifth parte of the said sixth parte for his Tythes
of the same and further that the impropriators of the Tythe of the Bondage feild
shall pay yearly one Quarter of Bartle for the church to the chnrchwartlens at
Candeliness upon which consideration; neither anie of the said Impropriators nor
Vickar for the time beinge shall hereafter be assessed Taxed or charged for or
towards anie repaires of the Chancell Church Steeple or Bells or to any constable
taxe for or in respect of anie of theire Tithes aforesaid or vickaridge and further
it is agreed That the said Impropriators shall be charged for theire other houses
Landes and grassinge which they shall occupie to all the monthly assessments and
taxes and Rates for the poore Church aad Constable at pound rent with the other
Inhabitantes and ffreeholders that is to say Mr. Robert Knowsley for his Farme
which he now occupieth of Eight Oskans of Land and his Grassinge at Twelve
pounds Rente and Mr. Allane Lamont for all his landes Grassinge and Cottages
excepting Deeringes farme att forty poundes yearlie Rent as they have beene usuallie
rated and taxed for the space of these ten yeares last past and that neither any of
our selves or heires or assignes shall assesse or taxe or consent that anie other shall
assesse or taxe anie of the aforesaid sessmcnts Taxes or Rates but accordinge to
the forme and proportions heere in this agreement set forth expressed and declared

A true note & Terrier of all the Tythes offerings & all other ecclesiastical
Dues belonging to the curacy of North-Burton as follows :-
A little Close, Herbage of the Chappelyard, Tythe of Wool, Hay, Hemp, Line,
Pigs, Turkies, Geese, Ducks, Apples & Pears, each House a Hen at Christmas,.
And the Easter offerings vizt a comunicant 2d., a renew'd cow 2d., a stripper 1d.,
a plough 1d., a ffole 1d., a beehive 1d., tythe of bees whe there is a tything of swarms, and tythe of eggs on Good Friday & one shilling for ye tythe of the
dove coat and demesne, ffor churching seven pence, and for burying a corpse one shilling.
Memorandum the copy hereof which was sent to ye Arch: Bps. Registry was
signed by these persons following propriis manibus

A perfect Terrier and Account of all ye Glebe Lands Tythes and other Rights
belonging to ye Curacy at Burton Fleming in ye County and within ye Diocess of
York now in ye use & possession of ye Revnd. Mr. Knowsley, or his tenants taken,
made and renewed according to ye old evidences & knowledge of ye Inhabitants
& exhibited in ye Primary Visitation of ye most Revd Father in God Matthew
Lord Archbishop of York holden at Bridlington June 2d 1749
Imp. All ye whole Tythes within ye township of Burton Fleming except ye
Tythe of corn & lamb viz. ye Tythe of wool, hay, pigs, geese, turkies, ducks,
eggs at Easter, hemp, line, honey and all other minute Tythes. Easter offerings
viz. a communicant 2d,, a renew'd cow ad., a stripper id., a Fole 1d., a plow id.,
Beehive id. Each house a hen at Christinmas or 6a 2s. per an. for ye Thomson's mill.
Item A peice of ground adjoining to Thos Barugh's calf close containing about
an acre more or less & ye churchyard

The infectious distemper among Horn-Cattle which ragd in almost all ye counties
in England began at North Burton February 1748 & ceasd again in June 1749 in wth
time there died in ye said Town about ye number of 150 cattle
The Register of Banns and Marriages published and solemnized
in ye Church of Burton Fleming according to an Act of Parliament
made in ye twenty-sixth year of ye reign of his Majesty King George
ye 2nd intitled-An Act for ye better preventing of clandestine
Marriages to commence ye 25th day of March 1754
The Population of this parish was taken by Thos. Staveley Overseer of the Poor
27th May 1811 and was found to he as under namely: -54 Houses, 56 Families,
37 Families employed in Agriculture, 11 Families employed in trade, 8 other
Families, 157 Males, 143 Females
The Population of this parish was taken by George Riby overseer of the Poor
27th May 1821 and was found to be as under namely :-65 Inhabited Houses,
65 Families, 2 Uninhabited Houses, 43 Families employed in Agriculture, 6 Families
employed in trade, 16 other Families, 203 Males, 183 Females, 386. Total number
of persons in North Burton
Population taken May 30th 1831 :-Inhabited Houses 77, Families 32, Uninhabited
houses 1, Families employed in Agriculture 60, Families employed in trade 14, other
Families 8, Males 211, Females 203, Total in 1831 414

We the undersigned Minister and Churchwardens of the parish of Burton
Fleming hereby certify that we have received the sum of Thirty pounds being the
amount of the Donation of Mr. Thomas Sawden from Mrs. Wharram Major in trust
for the purpose for which it was left this 8th day of April 1845

Burton Fleming 19th day of June 1793. Memorandum. The Donation of Thirty Pounds left by will by Thos Sawden, a native of Burton Fleming, in the year
of our Lord 1773, is now in the hands of the Rev Jn Minithorpe Curate, who is
to pay as interest for the same two shillings per month as long as he has it in his
possession, to be expended in the purchase of white bread, to be distributed to the
poor inhabitants attending Divine Service at the Church on the Lord's Day, agreeable
to the intention of the Donor. N.B. The above Thirty pounds is neither to be
demanded nor paid in without Three months' notice
