"HESSLE, a parish in the E.R. of Yorkshire, near the Humber, S. W. of Hull, bel. anciently to the Stutevils, whose heiress, Johanna, gave it to the canons of Walton. The impression on her seal was a woman riding sideways, with the bridle in her right-hand, she being the first that 'tis said began that custom, now in use with her sex."
