"ROWLEY, a parish in the Hunsley Beacon division of Harthill wapentake, East Riding county York, 5 miles from Brough, 4 N.E. of South Cave, and 4 S.W. of Beverley. Cottingham is its post town. The parish, which is extensive, comprises Bentley, Risby, Hensley, and two other hamlets The tithes were commuted for land and corn rents under an Enclosure Act in 1801. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of York, value £1,300. The church is dedicated to St. Peter. The parochial charities produce about £2 per annum."
