"WESTOW, a parish in the wapentake of Buckrose, East Riding county York, 2 miles S.E. of Whitwell. The parish, which is bounded on the S. by the navigable river Derwent, contains the townships of Eddlethorpe, Firby, and Mennythorpe. There are quarries of limestone. The surface is undulating and well wooded. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of York, value £180, in the patronage of the archbishop. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. The Wesleyans have a chapel. The local charities produce about £10 per annum, being the endowment of the parochial school founded by G. S. Foljambe, Esq., who is lord of the manor."
