The place:

A parish town, in the wapentake of Buckrose; 7 miles from Malton and Sledmere, 25 from York. Population, including Newton and Linton 326. The Church, a donative, is a perpetual curacy, dedicated to St. Peter, in the deanery of Buckrose.
