APPLETON LE STREET:
Geographical and Historical information from the year 1835.

"APPLETON LE STREET, a parish in the wapentake of RYEDALE, North riding of the county of YORK, comprising the chapelry of Swinton, and the townships of Amotherby, Appleton le Street, Broughton, and Hildenley, and containing 873 inhabitants, of which number, 173 are in the township of Appleton le Street, 3 miles W.N.W. from New Malton. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Cleveland, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £7- 8. 6., and in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of Trinity College, Cambridge. The church is dedicated to All Saints."


"AMOTHERBY, a chapelry in the parish of APPLETON le STREET, wapentake of RYEDALE, North riding of the county of YORK, 3 miles W.N.W. from New Malton, containing 249 inhabitants. A school is endowed with land producing about £20 per annum, in which, forty boys are educated, but only six of them are free scholars."


"BROUGHTON, a township in the parish of APPLETON le STREET, wapentake of RYEDALE, North riding of the county of YORK, 2 miles N.W. from New Malton, containing 94 inhabitants. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists. According to Bishop Tanner, an hospital, dedicated to St. Mary Magdalene, was founded here by Eustace Fitz-John, who died in the 1st of Henry II."


"HILDENLEY, a township in the parish of APPLETON le STREET, wapentake of RYEDALE, North riding of the county of YORK, 3 miles W.S.W. from Malton, containing 23 inhabitants."


"SWINTON, a chapelry in the parish of APPLETON-le-STREET, wapentake of RYEDALE, North riding of the county of YORK, 2 miles W.N.W. from New Malton, containing 334 inhabitants. There is a place of worship for Wesleyan Methodists."
