"BIRKBY, a parish, in the wapentake of Allertonshire, in the North Riding of the county of York, 5 miles to the N. of Northallerton, its post town. Hutton Bonville is a chapelry, and Kirkby and Little Smeaton a township of this parish The living is a rectory* in the diocese of York, value £172, in the patronage of the lord chancellor. The church is dedicated to St. Peter."

"HUTTON BONVILLE, a township and chapelry in the parish of Birkby, wapentake of Allertonshire, North Riding county York, 2½F miles N.W. of Cowton railway station, and 4 from Northallerton, its post town. It is situated on a branch of the river Swale, and contains the village of Lovesome Hill. It is a meet for the Bedale hounds. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of York, value £53. The church, dedicated to St. Lawrence, is a small stone structure, with open turret containing one bell. Hutton Bonville Hall is the principal residence."
