The place:
A parish in the wapentake of Gilling West; 4 miles from Barnard Castle (Co.
Durham), 6 from Gretabridge, 16 from Richmond, 60 from York. Population
1,095. The Church is a perpetual curacy, dedicated to St. Giles, in the deanery
of Richmond, diocese of Chester.
