"BRIGNALL, a parish, in the western division of the wapentake of Gilling, North Riding of the county of York, 3 miles to the S. of Barnard Castle. It is situated in a picturesque district on the small river Greta, a branch of the Tees, and contains the hamlet of Greta Bridge. The living is a vicarage in the diocese of Ripon, of the value of £300, in the patronage of the lord chancellor. The church is dedicated to St. Mary. Roman remains are frequently found in the neighbourhood."
"GRETA BRIDGE, a hamlet in the parishes of Brignall, Rokeby, and Wycliffe, North Riding county York, 3 miles S.E. of Barnard Castle. It is situated on the ancient Watling Street; and the river Greta, a tributary of the Tees, flows through the hamlet. Roman relics have been found in the neighbourhood."
