GREAT EDSTONE:
Geographical and Historical information from the year 1868.

"GREAT EDSTONE, a parish in the wapentake of Ryedale, North Riding county York, 5 miles S.E. of Helmsley, and 8 W. of Pickering. It is situated near the river Rye, and includes the township of North Holme. The land is chiefly arable. The living is a vicarage* in the diocese of York, value £188. The church is an ancient structure, but the numerous modern repairs have removed all traces of its early architecture. It has a dial stone, with a Saxon inscription, and a very ancient font. The Wesleyans have a chapel, and there is a day school in winter."

"NORTH HOLME, a township in the parish of Great Edstone, wapentake of Ryedale, North Riding county York, 3 miles S. of Kirkbymoorside. It is situated near the river Rye."
