"GREAT LANGTON, (or Langton - Upon - Swale), a parish in the wapentake of East Gilling, North Riding county York, 6 miles N.W. of Northallerton, its post town. The village, which is small, is situated on the banks of the river Swale, which becomes flooded during heavy rains. The parish includes the township of Little Langton. The old rectory-house and 2 acres of glebe are said to have been washed away by the river. The living is a rectory* in the diocese of Ripon, value £310. The church is a small stone structure without aisles or tower, standing in a lonely spot about a mile from the village. The parochial charities produce about £1 per annum. There is a National school."
