LASTINGHAM:
A description of the Rosedale History Archive
ROSEDALE HISTORY ARCHIVE
(Formerly Rosedale History Society)
We were a small local history society, founded in 2008 in order to bring together
and understand the fascinating and diverse history of Rosedale, Northdale and Hartoft.
In 2023, it was decided that, due to several factors, we would reduce
the workload involved in running a society but keep our very extensive archive available for further research.
Our ACHIEVEMENTS: Initially, our aim was to bring together as much information on Rosedale's history as we could,
beginning with very little but having generous help from other historians, particularly from Carol Bartlett (Genuki
research contributor), who had undertaken a great deal of invaluable research some years before we met. As a result
we began a large and still expanding archive of documents, maps, photographs, wills and many other items, either found
by us or donated by our many friends and supporters, including local museums. These can be made available to view at
our quarterly meetings.
Our involvement with the "Land of Iron" Heritage Lottery Fund project, community led and overseen by the North York Moors
National Park, allowed us to extend our knowledge of the nationally important ironstone mines and mineral railway of
Rosedale and the Esk valley. This project ran from 2012-2021. Projects with other local history groups have produced
publications (listed below). Our presence at the annual Rosedale Show has been invaluable for making local and national
contacts. Walks, talks and attendance at local history fairs have also been regular features of our work.
The ARCHIVE: We have a very large collection of files and folders on a wide range of social and industrial history subjects.
We have researched and collected material on buildings and structures both listed and unlisted; the ironstone mines and railway;
the priory, church and chapels; military service; the schools; trades; inns; waterways; local families, and many others. We also
have an extensive collection of written memories of Rosedale, original Memorial Cards, and a very large photographic archive.
MEETINGS: Our very informal and friendly Tea, Chat & History quarterly meetings to research the archive of Rosedale and Hartoft.
These are held at Updale Reading Room/Village Hall, Rosedale East in the afternoon on the first Sunday of March, June, September
and December.
