MARTON:
Geographical and Historical information from the year 1835.

"MARTON, a parish in the western division of the liberty of LANGBAURGH, North riding of the county of YORK, 6 miles N. from Stokesley, containing 397 inhabitants. The living is a vicarage, in the archdeaconry of Cleveland, and diocese of York, rated in the king's books at £4. 18. 9., and in the patronage of the Archbishop of York. The church, dedicated to St. Cuthbert, is a small ancient edifice, situated on an eminence at the western end of the village. Captain James Cook, the great circumnavigator, was born here, of humble parents, October 27th, 1728; he was killed at Owhyhee on the 14th of February 1779."
