"MASHAM, a market and parish-town, in the same wapentake and division as Bedale, is a short distance from that town, and seven miles S. E. from Middleham, pleasantly seated on the river Ure. The houses are straggling and unconnected for the most part, but some are neat and well built. It contains a handsome church, which is ornamented with a fine spire. Coarse woollen cloths are manufactured here, but not to any great extent. The market day is on Tuesday, and there is one annual fair held on the 17th of September, for horned cattle, sheep and pedlary The whole parish contained, in 1821, 2,767 inhabitants, and the township 1,171 of that number."
