"MIDDLESBROUGH, a parish partly within the liberty of ST-PETER-of-YORK, but chiefly in the western division of the liberty of LANGBAURGH, North riding of the county of YORK, comprising the townships of Linthorp and Middlesborough, and containing 236 inhabitants, of which number, 40 are in the township of Middlesborough, 65 miles E.N.E. from Stockton upon Tees. The living is a perpetual curacy, in the archdeaconry of Cleveland, and diocese of York, endowed with £600 royal bounty, and in the patronage of Thomas Hustler, Esq. An ancient chapel, dedicated to St. Hilda, with certain lands adjacent, were, in the reign of Henry I., given by Robert de Bruse to Whitby abbey, on condition that a cell of Benedictine monks to that house should be founded here, which was valued, in the 26th of Henry VIII., at £21. 3. 8. per annum; of the chapel no vestiges remain, but the cemetery is still used as a burial-ground."
