The place:
A parish in the wapentake of Allertonshire, and in the peculiar jurisdiction of
the Bishop of Durham; 7 miles from Northallerton, 10 from Stokesley, 11½
from Thirsk; 35 from York. Population 755. The Church is a vicarage,
dedicated to St. Peter, in the deanery of Cleveland.
