John Steel was my great, great, great grand dad and is buried at the side of the path on the right hand side on the way in to the church.
John Steel built and lived in Calm Cottage at the rear of the church, he put a bend in the lane so people could not see down to the cottage.
His wife was Ann Johnson (nee) and is buried along with him.
John was well over 6 foot tall, he bred and sold horses and he was also a prize bare knuckle fighter.
Bill Johnson told me a story:
One night a family member arrived at Calm Cottage by 'candle light' and slept on the hearth rug, he had been involved in a
fight at near by Osbaldwick ,hit some one killing them !
My Grandparents George Wilson and Maria Johnson were married in St. Mary's church at Warthill about 1900.
