"FERRY FRYSTON, a parish-town in the wapentake of Osgoldcross, liberties of St. Peter, and Pontefract."
"FERRY BRIDGE, is a hamlet, in the parish of Ferry Fryston, in the wapentake of Osgoldcross, about one mile from that village. The possession of this pass was warmly contested by the rival armies of York and Lancaster, since which period numerous skeletons, fragments of armour, and other military relics, have been often found in the neighbourhood. This place derives its importance from its situation on the great north road ; and for the accommodation of persons passing through, there are three excellent posting inns : it derives some advantage also from the canal opened in 1826, from hence to the modern port of Goole. The houses in the hamlet are, in general, well built ; and there is a beautiful bridge over the Aire. The only place of worship is a chapel for Wesleyan methodists. The population is returned with the parish, which contained, at the last census, 833 inhabitants.
