The place:
Also known as Houghton, or Tosset. This is a Chapelry in the township of
Sawley with Tosside, and parish of Gisburn, west division and Liberty of
Staincliffe; 7½ miles from Settle, 13 from Clitheroe (Lancs), 16 from Skipton.
Population 446 (in 1831). The Church, dedicated to St. Bartholomew, is a
perpetual curacy.
