The place:

A parish town, in the west division of Staincliffe, Liberty of Bowland; 3 miles from Clitheroe (Lancs), 10 from Blackburn (Lancs), 12 from Gisburn. Population 324. The Church is a vicarage dedicated to St. Michael, in the deanery of Craven.
