Some Halifax Crimes in the 14th Century

1337 Robert & John COPLEY with Robert TONG, indicted at York for slaying John BATESON

1378 Richard [of] SUNDERLAND, Northowram, indicted for the felonious slaying of Henry MATHEWSON with a "pol-hax" at Halifax, at Martinmas 1378.

John COCKCROFT, forester of Sowerbyshire, dwelling in Wadsworth, indicted for stabbing Adam WILLIAM-SON of Marsden with a knife, at Hebden Bridge or Halifax, in the Christmas of 1379. For twel ve years John evaded the law but in Candlemas 1391 was shot with an arrow from the bow of Thomas, TOMME-SON alias Thomas de HYLELEGH jnr of Sowerby.

Christiana COCKCROFT [wife of John above] indicted [with five accomplices] for divers felonies committed at Pontefract. C1379.

Thomas TOMME-SON[as above] indicted for murder of John HARDERY of Bingley whom he shot with bow and arrow at Hylelegh Place about St Andrews Day 1390.

Richards of MEKYSBURGH indicted for the muder of John DELL at Halifax on "Thump Sunday" 1390 whom he stabbed with a dagger.

William RADCLYFF indicted for causing the death of Robert de LYNDESAY in the manor of Langfield on the Friday before Christmas 1390, with a sword - acquitted.

Henry HOLRODES indicted for stabbing William MECHELL at the house of William RODE, at Martinmas 1390.

William DYCONSON, of Holand [Hoyland] indicted for slaying William de BERY with a sword "in ye grenne hyrst" at Candlemas 1391.

William de BERY, John WEST and John MEGOTSON, barker [tanner], all of Halifax, formally outlawed for failing to appear at Westminster to defend themselves after being indicted for killing deer in the park of Sir William de NEVYLE, Kt., of Raby, at Cottingley.
