"LEDSHAM, a parish in the West Riding of Yorkshire, a hamlet of Leeds. Ledsham-Hall, the manor-house, was the seat of the Hirebrods, one of whom, who was clerk of the Mt. in Ireland under the Ld.-deputy Strafford, sold it to Sir Richard Saltonstall in the R. of Cha. I. and his grandaughter carried it by marriage to Tho. Harley, brother to the late Ld.-treasurer. Here is an hos. built by Sir John Lewis, and endowed by him with 10 l. a year each for 10 aged people, who have each of them two rooms and a garden."
"FAIRBURN, (given as "FAYERBOURN") in the parish of Ledsham, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, bet. Pontefract and Sherborn, is noted for quarries of alabaster,"
"LEDSTON HALL, in the parish of Ledsham, in the West Riding of Yorkshire, S. W. of Sherburn, was the seat of the Withams for divers successions, till one of them sold it to Sir Tho. Wentworth, afterwards Earl of Strafford, who made it a stately edifice; but the late Earl, William, sold it to Sir John Lewis above-mentioned, who walled in the park, and built a stately lodge, from which there is a prospect of York minster, &c. An heiress of Sir John being married to the Earl of Huntingdon, it is now the seat of Ld. Hastings. Here are several noted quarries of stone."
