We lived in Winrose Approach in 1959 till I went to University in 1967 and then my mother stayed until about 1985. There was never a graveyard here and the church was fairly new - a tin hut not the present edifice. Fr Mullen was our parish priest and then Fr John Ruttledge. Some time after 1992, the houses and the present church were built and was always seen to serve as a chapel of ease to St Joseph's Parish in Hunslet, which had the new church built but it was then demolished after a fire in 2004. My sisters and I went to the primary school attached to the original church and the convent. I was at school there from 1954 till 1960, living at 2 Moor Place in the yard next to Hunslet Station which had a corn merchant's shop originally. We moved to Belle Isle and walked across the field to St Peter's from the end of Winrose Approach as there were no other houses there at the time! [Carol Pritchard ©2012] |
