Crookes |
The Crookes Church, the youngest of our city Churches, represents the one extension effort undertaken by the Sheffield District in its official capacity. After desultory conversations and suggestions in the District meetings, a Crookes committee was formed,- in 1907, with Mr. W. H. Barnes as its leader, and a site secured. The funds being inadequate for a permanent structure, an iron building, seating 320 worshippers was substituted, and opened on May 21st, 1908.The Rev. F. D. Tranter, of Barnsley, was invited to the pastorate, and, in the following September, a Church of twenty-five members was formed. Crookes is situated in an enlarging district, and the Church has before it the task-which cannot be entered upon too soon-of replacing its iron chapel with a more enduring edifice.
