THE SHEFFIELD AND ECCLESALL BIERLOW POOR LAW UNIONS, 1852
SHEFFIELD UNION comprises the four townships of Sheffield, Attercliffe,
Brightside Bierlow, and Handsworth, which comprise an area of about
10,600 acres; and in 1841 had 85,076 inhabitants, but in 1851 they had
increased to 103,602. Eight Guardians are elected yearly for Sheffield, two for
Brightside, and one each for Attercliffe and Handsworth. The WORKHOUSE,
in Kelham street, was originally built as a cotton mill, and was
enlarged in 1843 at the cost of about £6,000, though it had previously room
for more than 600 paupers. In 1848, the ratepayers of this township leased,
from the Duke of Norfolk, about 50 acres of moorland, which is now called
the Parish farm, and is situated a Hollow Meadows, near the Glossop road,
about 7 miles N. W. by W. of Sheffield. The expenditure of the Union was
£21,460 in 1841 ; £20,727 in 1842; £42,570 in 1813; £33,707 in 1844; £27,361
in 1845; £22,082 in 1816 ; £21,301 in 1847; £26,189 in 1848; £37,220 in
1849 ; and £26,455 in 1850. The sanitary expenses of this Union during the
visitation of cholera in 1849, amounted to £2,809, though here were only 66
deaths from cholera and diarrhoea. In 1832, when 402 died here of cholera,
the expenses of the township of Sheffield was £2,900. Mr. John Watkinson
is Union Clerk and Superintendent Registrar; Mr. Saml. and Mrs. Rogers,
master and matron of the Workhouse ; John and Mrs. Wright, asylum keepers;
and Thos. Worstenholm and Eliza Russell, teachers of the schools. For
Sheffield township, Mr. J. Ellis is levy clerk; Jph. Turnell and Wm. Blundell
relieving officers, and Rd. Bagshaw, Chas. Carr, Geo. Levick, and W.H.
Woolhouse, collectors of poor rates. They have offices in the Workhouse. Mr.
Frank Wever is assistant overseer for Brightside and Attercliffe, and Mr. G.
Sibray for Handsworth. Mr. Geo. Sykes is relievinq officer for Brightside,
Attercliffe, and Handsworth. Mr. Benj. Skidmore and Mr. Jph. Kirk are
registrars of marriages for the Union.
The DISTRICT REGISTRARS of Births and Deaths, and their DISTRICTS
are as follow: H. J. Hunter, for the SOUTH DISTRICT, which is bounded by
the Sheaf, Ecclesall Bierlow, and the S.E. sides of Barker's pool, Fargate,
High street, Angel street, Castle street, and Waingate; Fdk. E. Watkinson for
the WEST DISTRICT, comprising all the streets, &c., lying north-west of the
above as far as the south-east sides of Brook hill, Broad lane, Tenter street,
Westbar green, Newhall street, Bridge street, and Lady's bridge ; J. T. Craw-
shaw for the NORTH DISTRICT, comprising all Sheffield township lying north
and west of the last named district, including the north sides of Brook hill,
Broad lane, Tenter street, and Westbar green; B. Skidmore for the PARK
DISTRICT, comprising the whole of Sheffield Park ; Geo. Sykes for Brightside
Bierlow; George Dawson for Attercliffe-cum-Darnall; and Geo. Sibray for
Handsworth.
ECCLESALL BIERLOW UNION comprises the seven townships of
Ecclesall, Nether and Upper Hallam, Norton, Totley, Dore, and Beauchief;
the latter four of which are in Derbyshire. It had 31,628 inhabitants in 1841,
acrd 31,911 in 1851. The total expenditure of Ecclesall Bierlow Union in each
of the last ten years was as follows:-£8,369 in 1842; £12,909 in 1848;
£14,272 in 1844; £9,601 in 1845; £8,090 in 1840'; £7,963 in 1847; £8,823
in 1848; £9,305 in 1849; £8,691 in 1850; and £6,661 in 18.11. A large and
handsome WORKHOUSE, of freestone, with an elegant front in the Elizabethan
style, was completed about ten years ago by the Union, at the cost of more
than £0,000, in lieu of the old one on Sharrow moor. It is pleasantly situated
near Cherrytree hill, and has room for about 500 paupers, but has seldom
more than 250 to 300. Four Guardians are elected yearly for Ecclesall, two
each for Nether Hallam and Norton, and one for each of the other four townships.
Mr. William Firth is union clerk and superintendent registrar; Mr.
John Tasker, relieving officer and deputy superintendent registrar; James
Yeomans, master, and Mary Clarke, matron of the Workhouse; Mr. J. Brewin
auditor; and Samuel Ellis and Harriet Taylor, teachers of the schools. Mr. T.
Smith is vestry clerk for Ecclesall and Nether Hallam, and assistant overseer
for Upper Hallam; and Mr. Wm. Travis is collector of poor rates for Ecclesall
township, and has his office at 47, South St. Mr. Jonth. Dearden, jun., is col-
lector for Nether and Upper Hallam, and has his office at the Old Workhouse,
Crookes moor. Mr. Fras. Shaw, of Little Norton, is assistant overseer for
Norton, Beauchief, and Dore; and Mr. Jas Veale collects the poor rates in the
same townships. The Registrars for ECCLESALL UNION are W. T. Kidd, for
Ecclesall Bierlow District, comprising all that township and the Heeley portion
of Nether Hallam; Thos. Lee for Norton and Beauchief; Richd. Furness,
of Dore, for Upper Hallam, Dore, and Totley ; and Henry Bloore for Nether
Hallam District, comprising all that township, except Heeley. Messrs. W. T.
Kidd and Geo. Wilkinson are registrars of marriages for the Union.
