BREWIS
Found amongst the headstones in St Mary's churchyard at Kilburn, NRY.
Kilburn is nestled at the bottom of the Sutton Bank escarpment, and directly
below the White Horse, that well known Yorkshire landmark. And on a clear
day I can see it from my back garden! The figure cut in the chalk hillside
is gi-normous, and if my memory serves me right, I think it is now about 150
years old. No doubt someone on the list will be able to expand on the
history - if required.

West Hartlepool is now in Cleveland, but prior to 1974 was in the county of
Durham.

"Here rests in hope John BREWIS late of West Hartlepool. Born March 3rd

And finally, thank you to all those who replied to my recent question
concerning the occupation of Master Baker. As always, very informative!
Best wishes,

TOWL
Hi Diane
I haven't an answer to your 1881 census look-up, but I knew the exact
whereabouts of a headstone with this very surname, TOWL. I suppose it had
stuck in my mind because it is on my home ground, Harrogate, and its
closeness to my own surname.

Whatever, I am happy to share it with you, and only hope it belongs to you!
Do you think it may do?

Found amongst the headstones in Christ Church churchyard, Harrogate.
Unfortunately, it is slightly weathered - if I had to have the best guess at
the year of his death I would say 1840.

This is what I could read:

"In memory of Thomas TOWL of Boxton Wood, Lincolnshire who died at Harrogate
the 6th of ?????? 18?0 aged 51 years. ???????????????????????????????
WHITAKER Esq of ????????? Hill, Yorkshire by upon this stone is erected in

the headstone......

resteth under this stone. Jane died August 1st 1848 aged 36 years. Richard
died September 1st 1848 in the 43rd year of his age.
Also 4 of their children who died in their infancy.
Also of Mary Ann daughter of the above and wife of Edwin THORNBER who died
