LITTLE RAVELEY

"LITTLE RAVELEY, a parish in the hundred of Hurstingstone, county Hunts, half a mile south of Great Raveley, and 4 south-west of Ramsey. The parish is of small extent, and the village consists of only a few scattered houses. The living is a perpetual curacy in the diocese of Ely, value £50. The church, dedicated to St. James, was erected in the middle of the 14th century, and was formerly a chapel-of-ease to Bury. It is an ancient structure capable of containing eighty persons, and has recently been repaired and much improved. The Earl of Sandwich is lord of the manor. A Roman urn of blue earth and several skeletons were found while working a gravel pit.

Church History

• OS Grid Square TL 256820.
• The church of St James consisted only of a chancel and a nave. The walls are of rubble with stone dressing, partly plastered, and the roofs are covered with tiles.
• The chancel was probably built around 1230 and the nave was rebuilt late in the 14th century, when it was widened in the south. The chancel was restored in 1914.
• Late in the 20th century, the church was deconsecrated, modified and turned into a private house.

Civil Registration

• The parish of Little Raveley was originally part of the Huntingdon Registration District from 1st July 1837. Subsequently it became part of the Ramsey sub-District. From 1st April 1997 it once again is part of the Huntingdon District.
