SAWTRY ST. ANDREW

"SAWTRY ST. ANDREW, (or Beaumes), a parish in the hundred of Norman Cross,
county Huntingdon, 3½ miles south-east of Stilton. The village, which is small
and wholly agricultural, is situated on the road from Huntingdon to
Peterborough. The tithes were commuted for land and a money payment under
an Enclosure Act in 1804, and the glebe comprises 200 acres. The living is
a rectory in the diocese of Ely, value £169. The church, dedicated to St.
Andrew, is an ancient structure. The Wesleyans have a place of worship.

District (RG12/1235) in which Sawtry St. Andrew was enumerated, and which took place on 5th April
1891, has also been produced by the Huntingdonshire FHS (as Fiche C-7).

- The church of St Andrew consisted of a chancel, nave, west tower and south porch.
The records of it are scanty, but its walls seem to have been of rubble largely plastered
outside. Its roofs were of tiles overhanging at the eaves. The western tower seems to have
been without buttresses, to have been lit with small slits and covered with a low pyramidal
tiled roof. The south porch had an outer archway of one continuous chamfered roof.
- The church was demolished in 1879.
