Parish

In 1822, the following places were in
the Parish of Kirklington:

"BUTCHER HOUSES, a hamlet in the townships of Kirklington and Ainderby-Quernhow, and parishes of Kirklington and Pickhill; 7 miles, from Ripon, 7½ from Thirsk, 8 from Bedale."

"CHAPEL HILL, a farm house in the township of East-Tanfield, and parish of Kirklington; 2 miles SW. of Kirklington, 6 miles from Ripon, 7 from Bedale.

From the name of this house, and a field adjoining, called to this day Chapel-garth, and the foundations of a building, we are led to suppose there has, at some distant period, been a Chapel of ease here."

"EAST TANFIELD, in the parish of Kirklington, and wapentake of Halikeld; 2¼ miles SW. of Kirklington, 5 miles NNW. of Ripon. The principal inhabitants of this village, are Mr. Edward Horseman, farmer, and Mr. John Jackson, corn miller. Pop. 32."

"HEALAM HOUSE, (or Elam House) a farm house in the township and parish of Kirklington; 8 miles from Ripon."

"SUTTON HOWGRAVE, in the parish of Kirklington. and wapentake of Halikeld; 1¼ miles S. of Kirklington, 5½ miles N. of Ripon. Here the monks of Fountain's Abbey had two oxgangs, i.e. 26 acres of land, with a toft, croft, and pasture for four oxen on the common. Pop. 122.

The singular situation of this place is as follows, it consists of only three farms, one in the township of Sutton, in the parish of Kirklington; a second in that of Holm, in the parish of Pickhill; and a third in that of Nunwick, in the parish of Ripon. - The house in Nunwick has of late been converted into cottages."

"UPSLAND, in the parish of Kirklington wapentake of Halikeld, and liberty of Richmondshire; 1¼ miles SW. of Kirklington, 7 miles N. of Ripon. Pop. included with Kirklington."
