The Ancient Parish of ACOMB

"ACOMB, a parish in the liberty of St. Peter's; 2 miles W. of York. The church is an ancient small structure, and being seated on a dry and elevated situation, a number of families choose it for their place of sepulchre. Here is also a newly erected Methodist chapel, likewise a School, built by voluntary subscriptions of the inhabitants, and vested in certain trustees, upon Dr. Bell's plan of education. Population, 733."

"DRINGHOUSES, in the parishes of Acomb, York St Mary Bishophill the Elder, and York Holy Trinity Micklegate, liberty of St. Peter's; 1.5 miles SSW. of York. A pleasant village, in which is a chapel of ease the property of A. S. Barlow, Esq. Pop. 156."

"HOLGATE, in the parish of Acomb, and liberty of St. Peter's; 1 mile SW. of York. In this rural retreat, so well suited to his studying habits, resides the scholar and philanthropist, Mr. Lindley Murray. Population 83.

From this village, a vast quantity of earth was dug, which composes Severus's-Hills. --Drake."
