The first record to list every man, woman and child living in the township of Helmsley was the Population Census of 1841, but 18 years earlier Tukes and Ayer surveyed the town and produced a numbered map showing every property. They also prepared a detailed list of 274 tenancies

History

Between 1823 and 1890 (probably around 1851) the township of Bilsdale Midcable (in this parish) became a parish in its own right. See Bilsdale Midcable Parish.
In 1863 the township of Harome (in this parish) became a parish in its own right. See Harome Parish.
In 1846, W. Monkhouse published a book "A Brief Historical and Descriptive Account of Rievaulx Abbey". It is available here as a pdf document.
