"STAINTON, a parish in the wapentake and liberty of Langbargh; (the residence of the Rev. John Gilpin) 4 miles NW. of Stokesley; a small pleasant village. The church, dedicated to St. Peter, is an ancient neat structure (see Churches for photograph), but partly modernised by having received great repair about 14 years ago. it stands on elevated ground, at the western extremity of the village, with the vicarage house adjoining, which is a large and spacious mansion; the living is in the patronage of the Archbishop of York, and the Hon. and Rev. Henry Howard is the incumbent. In the chancel is the ancient sepulchre of the Pennyman family. Here is a small school, endowed with £5. per ann. for the educating of six poor children of the township. Pop. 356."
