The Ancient Parish of WHITKIRK

"WHITKIRK, a parish in the township of Temple Newsam, lower division of Skyrack; 4¼ miles E. of Leeds, 8 from Wakefield, 10¾ from Ferrybridge, 21 from York. The Church is a vicarage, dedicated to St. Mary, in the deanry of the Ainsty, value, ~£13. 5s. 7½d. p.r. £120. Patron, Trinity College, Cambridge.

In this Church of Whitkirk, was a chantry for two priests on the south side of the choir, and valued, 37 Henry VIII. at £12. 3s. 4d. founded by William Scargill, Esq. of Thorpe Stapleton. And on the north wall of the choir is a mural inscription to the memory of John Smeaton, F.R.S. the builder of the Eddystone Light House". --Whitaker's Loidis and Elmete."
