The Ancient Parish of EAST HAUXWELL

"EAST HAUXWELL, a parish in the wapentake of Hang West, and liberty of Richmondshire; 5½ miles NE. of Leyburn. The church is an ancient structure (see Churches for photograph), and the living is a rectory, in the gift of Mr. and Mrs. Gayle, incumbent the Rev. Henry Gayle; officiating curate the Rev. Joseph Abbot. Mrs. Orton is the principal inhabitant. Population with West Hawkswell, 176."


"BARDEN, (and Barden Dykes), in the parish of East Hauxwell, wapentake of Hang West, and liberty of Richmondshire; 1¼ miles W. of East Hauxwell, 3 miles NE. of Leyburn; a small straggling township, chiefly inhabited by farmers. Pop. 106."
